Digital Television - Video on demand Engineer

OUR CLIENT

Our client, Tandberg Television, is at the heart of Digital Television and looking for Video-On-Demand (VoD) Support engineer. Tandberg Television is pioneering advanced compression, video delivery systems, and interactive services. They are delivering Digital Television solutions to the world’s leading network operators, broadcasters and content owners. With head offices in the United Kingdom and manufacturing facilities in Europe and North America, Tandberg Television is looking for highly talented engineers, with good written and spoken English language skills, to join the rapidly expanding Asia-Pacific team.

THE POSITION

This is an exciting opportunity in a rapidly growing market to help bring on-demand video services to the cable TV industry in China. Tandberg TV has leveraged its US market leadership in VoD to achieve a strong position in the country already, and needs additional staff to support further expansion. The work will involve the roll out of hardware and software to new and existing customers, first and second line support, design guidance to system integrator and set-top box partners, and general communication with customers regarding the progress of issues, and new requirements. The post will be based in China (Shanghai/Beijing) and will require travel to customer sites around the country. Some work in other countries may be required on occasion.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

· Installation, configuration, expansion and verification testing of VoD systems

· 1^st and 2^nd line customer support, both software and hardware

· Escalation, progress and management of VoD system issues - working with both APAC and the US support and development groups

· Assistance with requirements gathering for new customers, and platform growth for existing customers in a timely and efficient manner

· Technical training for end users / customer workshops

· Liaison with APAC management for assistance, advice, and support

· Provide the principal communications path for daily activities between customers and APAC management

· Training and self-development to improve personal capabilities and competencies

REQUIRED ATTRIBUTES

· Strong UNIX skillset (Solaris & Linux) to include advanced installation, configuration, upgrading and trouble-shooting.

· Proficiency with Microsoft Windows platforms (XP, Server 200x) – basic installation, configuration, upgrading and trouble-shooting

· Basic capability to troubleshoot and repair Oracle database systems, including 9i and 10g

· Basic familiarity with XML schema and XML tools – analysis and trouble-shooting

· Solid understanding of computer networking principles – TCP, UDP, IPV4, DNS and multicast. Ability to design, analyse and trouble shoot data and video IP networks

· Basic understanding of digital broadcast systems and standards to include DVB-C, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, PSI and SI

· Ability to deal with customers in conflict scenarios.

· Capable of learning new skills and technologies as this rapidly moving industry evolves

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

The following skills are desirable in a candidate applying for this position:

· Experience with video on demand deployments and technologies

· Experience configuring and trouble-shooting DVB-C digital cable headends (SI, Video servers, QAMS, DOCSIS, etc.)

· Experience with set-top box software development

· Development or trouble-shooting experience with any of the following: Python, Tomcat, SOAP, CORBA, RPC, ODBC, JDBC, J2EE

· Oracle DBA

· Understanding of new delivery systems such as DOCSIS 3.0, FTTx and GPON

· Knowledge of OSS systems to include Open View, SNMP and MIBs

· IP delivery of digital video – RTP, RTSP, DSM-CC, Pro-MPEG FEC, RSVP, IGMP

· Basic Cisco IOS

· Experience and knowledge of telecom billing and provisioning systems

· Experience in project management, systems delivery, customers support and/or technical sales

· MCSE Certification

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION

· Qualified to degree level in computer science or an equivalent discipline.

· Fluent Mandarin speaker and written communicator

· English - minimum TOEFL score of 600 (written communication is key, verbal ability is preferred)

· Self-motivated, capable to work efficiently and effectively on customer sites without direct supervision

· Completer/finisher prepared to work diligently in overcoming barriers to complete necessary tasks

· Strong interpersonal and communications skills, and an ability to understand and discuss cable/IPTV/media industry related business issues.

· Ability to use standard business tools such as Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel

· Preferred minimum of 3 years experience in cable, telecoms or internet industry

· Excellent written and verbal communicator.

· Team player capable of working across language, cultural, geographical and time-zone barriers

· Mentoring skills for end customers or colleagues

· Ability to travel frequently and spend time on customer sites
