BP's Clean Energy Facing The Future (CEFTF) programme was launched in 2001 and aimed at developing the expertise in Tsinghua University and Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) as applied to clean energy technologies and novel conversion processes. BP has recently approved its expansion project at DICP to enable more energy related innovation projects to enter the pipeline and their economic and commercial potential assessed for BP. This new activity is called the Energy Innovation Laboratory (EIL).
DICP have made major advances on a number of technology projects of interest to BP in the sector of clean energy, novel hydrogen production, clean fuels, catalytic conversion of natural gas, coal and syngas , separations technologies (zeolite membranes) and biomass conversion.
A number of these projects are now in the commercialisation phase and ready for development with business units within BP, Third Parties inside and outside of China. Two projects are at an advanced stage of negotiation with third parties and require execution.
In Addition, a “hopper” of innovative conversion technologies has been developed which are now being researched to define their technical and economic merit. BP has located new and advanced evaluation equipment in the EIL including fully automated microreactors, CSTR's, catalyst preparation equipment and analytical capabilities. Some of these projects are at the stage where commercialization could be expected within the 2-5 year horizon within China.
The GRT Team is a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, technologists and commercial specialists, based primarily in the UK and China . The key competencies and activities covered are:
1. Developing and maintaining access to leading conversion technologies via a combination of partnerships and in-house developments;
2. Delivering successful project options for our Business Unit customers;
3. Developing awareness of emerging conversion technologies that impact the energy sector.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Director of EIL and Chief Scientist China to prioritise the activities for license/development and develop the strategic long term directions for the programmes with our partners in China (CAS, DICP).
- Manage and develop agreements for commercialilising existing “advanced” projects and jv's with third parties in and outside China.
- Work with the Chief Scientist, China to develop and enhance the project “portfolio” of opportunities and identify our top projects for internal development. Provide the required market appraisal studies as pre-requisite for proposal development and liaise with the key BU's and stakeholders within BP to develop proposals going forward. Prepare necessary IP agreements with third parties in collaboration with BP Legal to facilitate appraisal studies with partners.
- Work with the Director of EIL and Chief Scientist, China to actively promote and communicate the capabilities and vision of BP's Energy Innovation Laboratory at Dalian.
- Actively promote BP's HSSE culture. No harm to people or environment.
Experience and requirements :
- A minimum of 5-10 years experience in licensing technology coming through development activities.
- Excellent negotiating skills and a proven track record in commercialization with third party teams .
- Familiarity with new technology development in refining, chemicals and energy sector
- Experience of commercialization within China is highly desirable but not essential given positive attributes above.
- Prior knowledge of patent procedures is desirable
- Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills
Education :
Minimum requirement: BA in marketing/commercial business development or related topic such as patent law . A Science based qualification with associated business development/licensing expertise is also suitable.
